Important Update on GLP-1 Drugs Such As Ozempic

Caution needed.

I’m not for or against weight loss drugs.

But you all should know about the risks of the new weight loss drugs.

Even if you don’t take these drugs yourself, you probably have a friend or family member who is or is considering.

Some context: in “normal” weight loss (without drugs), about 25% of the weight lost will be lean body mass - everything except fat, such as muscle, organs, bone, cartilage - that you don’t want to lose. The rest of the weight is fat.

However, several recent studies have found that on GLP-1 weight loss drugs, up to 45% of the weight lost will be lean mass.

So almost half of the lost weight can be muscle, organs, bone, or cartilage.

But if people lift weights while on the GLP-1s, they go back to only about 25%.

What’s worse - the side effects of obesity or of the obesity drugs?

Time will tell. Until then, it is my opinion that EVERY PERSON on a GLP-1 drug should be weight training regularly, with someone who will push them.

A good weights program is the best way to prevent loss of lean body mass.

Please share with those who need to hear this.
